How to Perform Cisco Router Password Recovery without Losing Configuration

Forgot your CISCO router Password???………………..

Do you know that you change your password without losing your configuration?????…….

In this I will give you a briefing about how we change password (Console Password, Enable Secret, Enable Password, VTY Password etc.) without losing running configuration.

So let we start

Step -1. First, hook up the DB9 end of the standard light blue serial cable to your serial port.  The other end of the cable, should plug into the port labeled “Console” on the back of the Cisco router.  If you do not have a serial port, then you’ll need to go purchase a USB-to-serial adapter cable and install it on your computer. Start a terminal emulation program (Hyper Terminal, Tera-Term, Putty, Super-Putty etc.) for accessing via console and Use these terminal settings

Step-3. Press Break on the terminal keyboard within 60 seconds of power up in order to put the router into ROMMON (ROM Monitor Mode).I use putty for terminal emulation in this press ctrl + pause and if you use another one then follow this table.

Step-4 Type confreg 0x2142 at the rommon 1> prompt in order to boot from Flash.

Step-5 Type reset at the rommon 2> prompt. The router reboots, but ignores the saved configuration.

Step-6 Type no after each setup question, or press Ctrl-C in order to skip the initial setup procedure.

Step-7 Type enable at the Router> prompt.

You are in enable mode and should see the Router# prompt.

Step-8 Type configure memory or copy startup-config running-config in order to copy the nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM) into memory.

Warning: Do not type copy running-config startup-config or write. These commands erase your startup configuration.

Step-9 Type show running-config, you will see the router configuration and hostname will change router to delhi (In this I am using hostname of my router is “delhi”)

delhi # show running-config

Step -10 Type configure terminal.

delhi # configure terminal

delhi(config) #

Step-11Type enable secret <password>  to change the enable secret password. For example:

delhi(config) # enable secret cisco@12345

Step-12Type config-register to change the value of configuration register.

delhi(config)# config-register 0x2102

Step -13 Type ctrl+Z to exit from Global Configuration Mode and type write memory command to save configuration running-config to startup config.
